Malayalam movies in 80s

P. Padmarajan (Malayalam: പി. പത്മരാജന്‍; 23 May 1946 – 24 January 1991) was an Indian author, screenwriter, and film director who was known for his landmark works in Malayalam literature and Malayalam cinema. Padmarajan was the founder of a new school of film making in Malayalam, along with Bharathan, in the 1980s, which created films that were widely received while also being critically acclaimed.
Padmarajan was noted for his fine and detailed screenwriting and expressive direction style. Padmarajan made some of the landmark motion pictures in Malayalam cinema, including masterpieces like Oridathoru Phayalvaan (1981), Koodevide (1983), Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil (1986), Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal (1986), Thoovanathumbikal (1987), Moonnam Pakkam (1988), Innale (1989), Season (1989) and Njan Gandharvan (1991).

1.Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal

Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal (Malayalamനമുക്കു പാർക്കാൻ മുന്തിരിത്തോപ്പുകൾ, namukku pāṟkkāṉ muntirittōppukaḻ  is a 1986 Malayalam-language Indian feature film directed by Padmarajan.[1][2][3]
The film is noted for its rich and detailed screenplay, expressive cinematography and flowing musical narration. The film is considered as one of the seminal works of the golden age of Malayalam films that lasted from the late 1980s until the early 1990s.

2.Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil

Arappatta Kettiya Gramathil (Malayalam: അരപ്പട്ട കെട്ടിയ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ, English: In the Village Which Wears a Warrior's Belt) is a 1986 Malayalam film directed by P. Padmarajan, based on his own short story of the same name. The film revolves around three men, Zechariah (Mammootty), Hilal (Ashokan), and Gopi (Nedumudi Venu), who go to a brothel in a remote village and the problems they had to face there in the next 24 hours. It also stars Kanakalatha, Sukumari, Unnimary and Jagathy Sreekumar in other pivotal roles.

3.Thoovanathumbikal
Thoovanathumbikal (Malayalam: തൂവാനത്തുമ്പികൾ, English: Dragonflies in the Spraying Rain) is a 1987 Malayalam romance film written and directed by P. Padmarajan, which is based on his own novel Udakappola. The film revolves around Jayakrishnan (Mohanlal) who falls in love with two women; Radha (Parvathy) a distant relative of his and Clara (Sumalatha) an escort in town. The film has turned into a cult film with a large following and commands good viewership even till today. Polls conducted by several websites state the film to be one of the greatest Malayalam films of all time.[2] The film was ranked #8 by IBN Live in its list of greatest Indian films of all time. Over the years, the film has been immensely praised for the rich film score and popular songs, cult dialogues and characters, detailed screenplay by Padmarajan and versatile acting by Mohanlal. Rain is a recurring theme and is portrayed almost as a character in the film.

4.Moonnam Pakkam

Moonnam Pakkam (English: The Third day, Malayalam: മൂന്നാം പക്കം) is a 1988 Malayalam drama film written and directed by Padmarajan. It stars Jayaram, Thilakan, Keerthy, Jagathi Sreekumar, Rahman, Ashokan and Ajayan.[1][2][3] Keerthy and Ajayan made their debut in this film. The film met with universal critical acclaim and turned to be a cult film. The performance of Thilakan in the film was widely praised and is considered to be one of his best. This film was also a commercial success.

5.Njan Gandharvan
Njan Gandharvan (Malayalam: ഞാന്‍ ഗന്ധര്‍വന്‍, translation: I, Celestial Lover) is a 1991 Malayalam fantasy romance film written and directed by P. Padmarajan. It stars Nitish Bharadwaj and Suparna Anand in lead roles.
The film is an esoteric fantasy about a girl and her passion for a celestial lover, who keeps appearing from a wooden statue that she found on a beach but is invisible to others.



 

Bharathan

Bharathan (Malayalam: ഭരതന്‍, 14 November 1946 – 30 July 1998) was an Indian film director, artist, lyricist, music director, sculptor, poster designer, editor and art director. Bharathan is noted for being the founder of a new school of film making in Malayalam cinema, along with Padmarajan, in the 1980s, which created films that were widely received while also being critically acclaimed. A train of directors, and screen writers followed this school onto the 1990s including Sibi Malayil, Kamal, Lohithadas, Jayaraj, and Sathyan Anthikkad.
He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and prolific filmmakers of Malayalam cinema and has directed more than 50 movies in multiple languages. He was born at Engakkadu near Wadakkancherry, in present day Thrissur district of Kerala, India.

1.Vaisali
Vaisali (Malayalam: വൈശാലി) is a 1988 Malayalam film directed and edited by Bharathan.Produced by Dr. M.M Ramachandran (Atlas Ramachandran) and scripted by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, it was an adaptation of a sub-story told by Vedavyasa to King Yudhishtira in the epic Mahabharatha. It is the story of Vaisali, a devadasi girl who was assigned the mission of seducing Rishyashrungan, the son of Mahirshi Vibhandakan and bringing him to Chambapuri to perform a mahayagam to cause rain. Shot in a lavish setting, Vaisali was a huge hit at box office. This film, often considered as one of the best works of Bharathan is also considered as a cult classic in Malayalam cinema world. The cinematography by Madhu Ambat was widely appreciated and had won several awards.

2.Amaram
Amaram (Malayalam: അമരം, English: Stern) is a 1991 Malayalam film directed by Bharathan and written by A. K. Lohithadas. It stars Mammootty, Murali, Maathu, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Ashokan, Chitra, and Kuthiravattam Pappu in the main roles. The film's score is composed by Johnson while the songs are by Raveendran.
The film is considered one of the best works of Bharathan. The performances by Mammootty, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, and Murali won great appreciations. The film, which has since attained cult status, was also one of the highest grossing films of 1991. K. P. A. C. Lalitha won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Bhargavi. And Mammotty won the Filmfare Awards South Best Actor Award for his role as Achootty.


 

 S. N. Swamy

 

S. N. Swamy is an Indian screenwriter who works in Malayalam cinema. Particularly known for scripting films in the thriller genre, he has scripted some of the biggest hits in Malayalam film history including the CBI film series (Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, Jagratha, Sethurama Iyer CBI and Nerariyan CBI),[1] Koodum Thedi, Irupatham Noottandu, Moonnam Mura, 1 August, Naduvazhikal, Adikkurippu, Parampara, Dhruvam, and Nariman. Though he is best known for the association with directors K. Madhu and Joshiy, he has also associated with other major directors in a few films.


1.Oru CBI Dairy Kurippu

Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (English: A CBI Journal Entry) is a 1988 Malayalam mystery film directed by K. Madhu, written by S. N. Swamy, and starring Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh, and Sukumaran.
This film is the first in the series of the CBI investigative thrillers featuring Mammootty as CBI officer Sethurama Iyer. It was produced by M. Mani under the banner Sunitha Productions. Sequels to the film are Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004), and Nerariyan CBI (2005). A fifth sequel Veendum CBI in the franchise has been announced and is now in the pre-production stage.

2.Moonnam Mura
Moonnam Mura is a 1988 action thriller Malayalam movie starring Mohanlal, Lalu Alex, and Revathi. It was directed by K. Madhu.
A group of high-ranking political officials are on a trip when their bus is hijacked by a group of terrorists headed by Charles (Lalu Alex). They demand the release of their old colleagues languishing in prison in exchange for safe release of the politicians. DIG Menon (Sukumaran) is handling the negotiations. Soon things start getting out of control and couple of hostages are killed.






3.Adikkurippu


Adikkurippu is a 1989 Malayalam-language legal thriller film written by S. N. Swamy and directed by K. Madhu. It stars Mammootty in the lead role, who plays the role of an advocate.
The story revolves around the castaway Basheer (Jagathy Sreekumar), lost his memory partially. He is unable to recollect the past about him. The captain of the ship (Lalu Alex) who found him would like to handover Basheer to the relatives post anchoring in Kochi. But someone tries to kill Basheer and planning to deport him. Adv. Bhaskara Pillai (Mammootty)comes to his rescue and finds the people behind the ploy.
